Can the CalmCarry device help nervous flyers?

I’ve had the CalmCarry device in my life for around a month now, and as I’ve shared in my original review, it’s really making a difference.

I wanted to share a quick update though, which felt particularly exciting for me, and that was using the CalmCarry on a plane.

Firstly, there were absolutely no issues with getting through security with it or anything. It’s an interesting looking device, but I brought it with me in my pocket, put it through the scanner, and all was well.

Secondly, and as I’ve pointed out many times on this fair blog, I tend to never be able to sleep on planes. I don’t know what it is in particular, but it’s very hard for me to switch off, and relax in any way. Even on an 8 hour flight to Oman at the end of 2022, overnight, I couldn’t get to sleep.

This blog is called ‘The Anxious Travel Guy’, so naturally, I fly a lot. I wouldn’t say I’m a great flyer, but it’s definitely gotten a bit worse over the last year or so, and I know it’s a common issue for people who do have anxiety, and other, similar conditions. I’m not quite sure what the actual issue is, but I’m certainly not as comfortable as I once was. I don’t think it’s the tight space, even if the feeling of being enclosed is not always fun. I think maybe I don’t like the idea of having a breakdown on a plane (I mean, who does?), or having a panic attack.

I had a really horrible flight around a year ago, which I think contributed to it. It was the third flight in a day, I was exhausted, and mentally shot, and this is the closest I’ve come to having a panic attack on a plane. Since then, I arm myself with distractions, and for my latest flight (around 3 hours), I had the CalmCarry to bring along.

The flight was very busy, and I was in the aisle seat, in a full row. There was also a very annoying drunk trio a couple of rows back (the flight was at 6am, so kudos to them for managing to get that drunk, at a very early hour), so the flight didn’t exactly scream relaxation.

Anyway, we took off, and as I normally do on these flights, I started playing a game on my phone to distract myself. I felt tired, but I often feel tired on flights, and nothing comes of it. I decided to finish the game, and optimistically thought I would try the CalmCarry, and sit back, and close my eyes. If nothing else, I knew from experience, that the CalmCarry relaxes me, so if nothing else, I was looking forward to being more chilled on the flight.

Now, I can’t pretend I slept through until we landed, but I did manage to sleep for a decent majority of the flight. I would wake up a few times (once through turbulence), but managed to doze a bit longer, all whilst holding and using the CalmCarry. As I’ve shared in the original review, one great feature of the CalmCarry is the fact it turns itself off after 20 minutes. So, in a way I did myself a favour waking up, as I was able to turn it on again, and doze a bit longer.

I just used the CalmCarry, I didn’t have music on or anything else, and honestly, it felt like a bit of a win to even manage a little bit of sleep, so I will absolutely share it!

I’ve been really impressed with the CalmCarry so far, and my next step is to start using it a bit more in the daytime, to help with focus. I’ve just been using it for getting off to sleep, which overall, is working really well, and I will share an article on that shortly.

If you’re curious about the CalmCarry device, then you can get an extra 15% off the cost of one (on top of any sales run by CalmCarry), simply by clicking this link, or using the code ANXIOUSTRAVELGUY at checkout.
